Something that is easy to overlook when ordering dinner. Part of Hancock County, it is the best known town on Mount Desert Island with an approximate population of 5,235 (per year 2010 census) and 28,800 scenic acres. It was very informative and gives you whole new respect for the industry and the animal. Bar Harbor, Maine, originally incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796, has a world renowned ambiance that blends seashore community, Down East character, and the famous Maine Lobster. If you are in Bar Harbor I highly suggest visiting the Mount Desert Oceanarium. (It takes a lobster 7 years to get to your plate.) Located at the College of the Atlantic, on Route 3 in Bar Harbor. It was amazing to see the hatchery and I was really surprised at both the size (that is a baby lobster to the right) of the lobsters and how long it took them to grow in the wild. (Amazing that these tasty creatures don’t eat their own claws – and they could – they’ll grow back.) At the hatchery, we saw literally thousands of lobsters less than an inch in length in tanks of fast-moving water because when given the option lobsters like to eat lobster too. Thanks to their ceaseless efforts, the Oceanarium is a fascinating place to visit, providing both education and entertainment. One hour long guided tours are available, but by reservation only.
